March 17, 2025

By:

Panelle Press Team

Ashley Ladd, Director of Diversity, Inclusion & Social Impact at Snyk shares how embracing her authentic self transformed her career.

She talks about breaking free from outdated business norms, speaking up against bias, and building a network of allies who fuel success.

Her advice? Find your personal “Board of Directors,” advocate for yourself, and never stop learning - especially in the ever-evolving DEI space.

To drive real change, she pushes for dismantling systemic barriers, not just individual wins. Read more from Ashley here...

What has been your career-defining moment as a woman in business?

While I couldn't pinpoint one single "defining moment," I've experienced a powerful evolution in my career as I've embraced my authentic self. Early on, I sometimes felt pressure to conform to traditional business norms, which often felt at odds with my values and approach.

"I began to lean into my strengths – empathy, collaboration, and a focus on systemic change – rather than trying to fit a mold."

A turning point came as I began to lean into my strengths – empathy, collaboration, and a focus on systemic change – rather than trying to fit a mold. This shift allowed me to build genuine connections, drive impactful initiatives, and ultimately find greater fulfilment in my work.

Professionally, it's opened doors to leadership opportunities where I can champion inclusive practices. Personally, it's reinforced the importance of aligning my career with my core values, which bring a sense of purpose and resilience.

Were there any obstacles you had to overcome as a woman in business?

Absolutely. Like many women, I've encountered subtle and not-so-subtle forms of bias, from being talked over in meetings to having my ideas attributed to others. Early in my career, navigating these situations could be frustrating and even demoralizing.

However, I've learned the importance of speaking up, advocating for myself and others, and building a strong network of allies. I have had the privilege of having some incredible people managers who consistently encouraged me to speak up, and pushed me to challenge myself and think critically to achieve success.

Because of their guidance, and leading by example, I found the confidence within myself to push through the difficult situations with grace, while using those moments as an opportunity fuel to catapult me to the next level.

I also recognize that my experience is not universal and that intersectionality plays a significant role in the challenges women face. This reinforces my commitment to creating truly inclusive spaces where all women can thrive.

What advice would you give to a younger woman looking to join your industry?

My advice would be:

1) Find your personal Board of Directors: Seek out mentors, sponsors, and peers who understand your vision and will champion your growth. Networking is crucial but focus on building genuine relationships.

2) Embrace your unique strengths: Don't try to be someone you're not. Your diverse perspectives and experiences are an asset.

3) Be bold and advocate for yourself: Don't be afraid to ask for what you want, whether it's a promotion, a raise, or support for a new initiative come prepared to show how you turned action into impact for the company.

4) Never stop learning: The DEI landscape is constantly changing and facing some very strong headwinds, so stay curious and committed to ongoing professional development.

If you could do one thing to accelerate the pace of change for gender equality, what would it be?

I would focus on dismantling systemic barriers. While individual actions are important, true progress requires addressing the root causes of gender inequities.

"Creating change won’t happen overnight, so stay the course, drive consistency and you will begin to see the results."

This includes advocating for policies like pay equity, affordable childcare, and paid family leave, as well as challenging discriminatory practices in hiring, promotion, and leadership development.

As we know, creating change won’t happen overnight, so stay the course, drive consistency and you will begin to see the results.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Don't be afraid to take risks, embrace failure as a learning opportunity, and always stay true to your values.

What’s your go-to advice for preventing burnout?

Ruthlessly prioritize. To me, this is about setting boundaries, saying "no" when necessary, and making time for activities that bring you joy. It's crucial to disconnect from work and cultivate interests outside of your career. I find these moments help to fuel more creativity and innovation at work.

Why do you think it’s important for women to help other women win?
"When women support each other, we create a powerful force for change."

Because we rise together. When women support each other, we create a powerful force for change. Mentoring, sponsoring, and advocating for other women not only benefits individuals but also contributes to a more equitable and inclusive society for all. It's about paying it forward and creating a legacy of empowerment.

What compelled you to attend a Panelle event?
"I believe that collective action and shared wisdom are essential for driving change."

I'm drawn to Panelle's commitment to fostering meaningful connections among women. I believe that collective action and shared wisdom are essential for driving change. I appreciate the opportunity to learn from other women's experiences, share my own insights, and build a stronger network of support.

Finally, please put the spotlight on another woman in business who either inspires you or has pulled out the seat for you.

One woman that I look up to and who continues to pull out the seat for me is Fran Hauser. Fran is a leadership expert and champion of women in the workplace. She helps women reach their full potential through her work as a bestselling author, speaker, investor, and mentor.

Fran and I met after she released her first book ‘The Myth of the Nice Girl’ and since then, she’s connected me to incredible women to help me grow my network, recommended me for leadership programs, and been a mentor in work and motherhood. She is proof that when women lift each other up, we all win!
